A conversion act
Bournonville, Nadja, 1983-
A narrative on the phenomenon of female hysteria, using fragmentary traces of this highly elusive pathology to create a discrete world of often-surrealistic photographs, drawings and prints that blend fact with fiction. The artist's research methods focus on the act of transformation, the spectacle, the staging, the attempt to document and size up the body through photography, the subliminal erotic aspect, and medical theory. Essays by Karin Johannisson, Christina von Braun, and Dorothee Elmiger contextualize the history and aesthetics of hysteria.--From publisher. Printed in an edition of 500. Texts in Swedish and German, with translations in English.
