Korean expressions, proverbs, and superstitions from my childhood are presented in fragments of conversations with three Korean men: S.J., Tony, and Richard (1st, 1.5, and 2nd generation, respectively). “Plucked Stars” is a documentary short offering light-hearted insight into how the three individuals understand, treat and value their Korean immigrant familial relationships. The title is derived from the Korean expression, “plucking a star in the sky,” which means to grasp for something out of reach. These men’s present familial and societal standing are evidence of this, as they share the subsequent turmoil of being affected by the expectations of their first-generation Korean parents. Show less
